What do you get if you combine Disneyland and Salvador Dali? Well, Crazy House in Dalat of course, which can actually be your home for a night or two!
Few places do their names justice to a greater extent than Crazy House in Dalat. A Vietnamese artist decided to build a house in a rather unique style in 1990. Since then the project has just carried on and been added to and today this unique attraction covers an area of around 2000 square meters and has turned into a lot more than just a single building. Trees, hundreds of meters of paths and bridges, multi story buildings and a termite mound are just some of the things you can see here.
Originally we planned on going here if there was any time left at the end of the day, and only if it was a bit more than just some weird artsy stuff.
Boy, were we in for a surprise!
This is probably every child’s dream place and offers quite an experience for adults as well. The houses look like something designed by Walt Disney himself; paths going up into trees, stairs made out of logs and the whole places appearing to be one huge tree house. The area is continuously expanded and improved as well, as such some places are just empty rooms for now. The room below will eventually turn into a ballroom inspired by the ocean.
If you feel that this place is just too amazing to depart from after a few hours walking around there is an option to spend the night. Each hotel room has a separate theme, like kangaroo, bear and honeymoon. Business Insider listed the hotel here as one of the strangest hotels in the world, along with Propeller Island City Lodge that we have previously visited. If we had not booked a hotel in Dalat already this would certainly have been our first choice!
An hour or two is quickly spent exploring this area and viewing all the… ehm… weirdness. There is a small cafe in the garden where one can relax and enjoy a drink or snack.
Entrance is 40 000 dong, or around $2. Accommodation is however more expensive, starting at $29. In other words still very cheap, but slightly more expensive than regular Vietnamese prices. The verdict is clear anyway: This place is well worth a visit!
