Helleren i Jøssingfjord

Helleren – The Houses Under the Rock

If you are worried about a leaky roof during rainfall, simply build your house under a massive overhanging mountain!

The 200 year old houses in Jøssingfjord in Norway is an impressive sight and almost a bit surreal. “Heller” is a Norwegian word for rock shelter and this one in Jøssingfjord is among the largest in Norway, measuring 60 meters.

More houses used to be here, but they are now gone

The place is easily accessible, travelling along the highway in south western Norway exiting onto the former highway near the sight.

More houses used to be located here, but today only 2 remain. It is a cultural and historical landmark that must be preserved, but in typical Norwegian style the houses are fully open to tourists. A small sign reading “Max 5 persons inside the house at the same time” reminds us to proceed with care, something that appears to be adhered to.

In typical Norwegian style there are few restrictions and rather guidelines that people are trusted to follow.

Since the houses are sheltered from the rain their roofs are just plain wood boards, no tiles needed. Inside the houses there is still furniture and a vase housing some sort of green plant. Perhaps someone is looking after it?

Still green!

Right on the other side of the road are some old funicular tracks that were probably used to bring supplies up to the hydroelectric power station. The tracks are very steep and the trolley has been bolted to the bottom, but it is a nice sight nonetheless.

It is possible to walk up the tracks to the top of the hill for a nice view

If you wish to spend the night here you may opt for what is perhaps the coolest accommodation in all of Norway. Inside the tunnel where the old road goes you can rent a hammock! February was a bit too cold for us to try this out, but we will return later this year for a closer look.

Far up and into the hillside lies a tunnel where you can sleep
You can sleep here! Hammocks are available for rent.

  • Helleren is located right next to riksvei 44 (Norwegian national road 44). There is a large parking lot and information signs outside and inside the houses, in Norwegian and English. Parking is free.
  • The houses are over 200 years old, treat them well when visiting.
  • There are other interesting sights and hikes nearby, such as Kolbolten, Trallebanen, Jøssingfjord kystfort and Tunnelstuo.
