Norwegian Mount Everest Base Camp Wedding

2018 Travel Year

2018 has almost come to an end and we look back on what we have done this year.

The airplane wreck in Oslo

Flyvrak i Maridalen i Nordmarka, Oslo

Our very first (mini) trip started in early January. That is when we travelled to Oslo in Norway to find a hidden airplane wreck. And surely we found it! Excavating the wreck from the snow was so exciting that we actually had to come back in the summer to see what it all looked like when the snow was gone.

USA and the Caribbean

Alligator Everglades National Park

2018 is perhaps one of the years when we used our passport the latest. They did not see the outside of the drawer until late March, but in return we got to use them rather frequently. The journey went to Florida where we got to see both Disney World and Everglades National Park.

Further on our trip took us to a series of smaller countries in the Caribbean. We got the opportunity to climb atop an old volcano, drive into another one, namely the world’s only drive-in volcano in St. Lucia and snorkel through one of the strangest art exhibitions we have ever seen; an underwater sculpture park in Grenada. The latter we made a video about:

During the trip through America we also got a fair bit of experience travelling with a drone and realised that this certainly comes with its pros and cons. We have written about travelling with a drone here.

Faroe Islands

Long exposure Faroe Islands

In May we travelled to the wild and beautiful Faroe Islands. It is located close to Norway, yet most Norwegians have never been there. It can truly be recommended, especially if you live in Norway; Such a beautiful place so close to home is hard to come by. We got to see the optical illusion Trælanípan, explore the highest point on the Faroe Islands and summarise 8 places to visit if (when!) you go to here:

Belgium

Le Competir de Marie, Michelin star restaurant in Mons, Belgium

Belgium continues to surprise us with exciting destinations. Tora unfortunately had to work, but Jørn got the opportunity to travel around Belgium. First stop was Bruges, a very cosy and old town, not to mention the awesome feature that is a brewery where beer flows through the streets! Further on the journey went to Mons, where Jørn got to eat at a Michelin-star restaurant for a fraction of a normal price and climb down a 6400 old flint mine.

Rjukan, Norway

The Sun Mirror in Rjukan

Towards the end of the summer the destination was set to the small town of Rjukan in Norway. Although the town may be known for its heavy water production during the second world war there is much else to see here as well. First on the itinerary was the sun mirror that reflects the sun down to the town in winter when the mountains otherwise create a permanent darkness. Next was witnessing the Rjukan waterfall being full opened during a theatrical play, a very special experience.

Wedding

Norwegian Mount Everest Base Camp Wedding

In October we carried out what is safe to say the craziest plan so far. We got married on Mount Everest Base Camp! We did not announce this until December, so for two months we kept this secret from friends and family. More about this is of course to come in 2019, so stay tuned!

Trips from 2017

Not all our trips from 2017 was published the same year, so here are some of the other journeys we wrote about in 2018:

The rest of our trips from 2017 can be found in 2017 Travel Year.

2018 in numbers

Finally we have gathered some statistics related to our trips in 2018:

  • 9 countries have been visited (plus Norway and the Faroe Islands if those are also counted)
  • 24 flights has been undertaken
  • 63,5 hours has been spent in the air
  • 41043 km in the air (1.02 times around the world)
  • 25000 photos taken
  • Countless good memories!

Next year

2019 is fairly un-planned so far, but now that we have gotten married it is of course about time for a honeymoon. The honeymoon is supposed to be the ultimate journey, but we do have a bit of a “problem”: Being lucky enough to have experienced as much as we have already. We got married on Mount Everest Base Camp and travelled around the world for 3 months, something that cannot be easily surpassed. Therefore the honeymoon will go to a place we have dreamed about visiting for a long time, namely Galapagos.

After this we will probably come up with something fun to do. Happy new year from the both of us 🙂
