Fish for breakfast in Tokyo

Tokyo has the largest wholesale fish market in the world. Both whole fish and partitioned products can be purchased here. What could be better than completely fresh sushi for breakfast?

The road by the entrance to the fish market. Here tourists enter to buy food.

The majority of the fish market is reserved for wholesale, it’s the largest in the world if this kind. The market opens at 3 in the night and the fish is auctioned; after this it is prepared for resale. In the outer part of the market this fish is sold, where tourists and locals can buy both whole fish, meat slices and prepared meals. The latter includes sushi in many shapes and sizes. The prices are not super cheap, but better than what Norwegians are used to.

Many odd fish can be found at the market. How about a complete, large red fish?

We find a plate with 8 different kind of fish: tuna, salmon, octopus and some kind of roe and four other kinds we are unable to recognise.

There are multiple locations in the outskirts of the market to consume food, but a much better idea is to go to the nearby Hamarikyu Gardens, a public park a few hundred meters away. The park was originally a part of the garden of Japan’s former Shigun, but in 1946 it was turned into a public park.

Entrance is 300 yen, around 2,6 euros. Inside the park we find beautiful trees, some buildings and quite a lot of ponds and canals. As the park is located next to the ocean the water in the canals and ponds are actually salt water and has tides.

In the park there is in addition to trees and ponds also wildlife.

The park has many places to sit down; in the middle of the park there is a tea house where one can have a cup of tea and enjoy the view.

Hamarikyu Gardens Teahouse is a nice place to have a cup of tea and take a break from the busy everyday life of Tokyo.

Benches are also located along the canals and makes a perfect place to relax and enjoy sushi in an otherwise very busy city.
